Film Description Virtually unknown today, John Henry Haynes (1849--1910) may be regarded as the father of American archaeological photography. His photographic odyssey took him from Athens to Constantinople, across Anatolia, and ultimately to Mesopotamia. Dr. Robert Ousterhout, Professor, History of Art and Byzantine Art and Architecture, University of Pennsylvania, rediscovers Haynes's career—including his relationship with the Penn Museum—and assesses his unique blend of artistry and documentation.
