Film Description Dr. Pat McGovern of the Penn Museum's Biomolecular Archaeology Laboratory recently published Uncorking the Past, a book about humanity's ingenious, intoxicating quest for the perfect drink. Dr. McGovern's ancient brew Midas Touch recently won first place at the Great American Beer Festival in Colorado. Midas Touch is produced by Sam Calagione's Dogfish Head Brewery in Delaware. We asked visitors to Dr. McGovern's talk on ancient extreme beverages what their favorite beers were. Dr. McGovern and Sam Calagione also touch on what makes their new brews golden. One extreme beer recipe called Chicha, from Peru was recently highlighted in the New York Times. Dr. McGovern, Sam, Dr. Clark Erickson from the Penn Museum all chewed several pounds of blue corn to make the ancient ale. An enzyme in their saliva contributes to the distillation process and adds a special (would you believe it?) dry flavor.
