Description | "Large horse and rider (head missing)...The horse stands with right foreleg and left hind leg slightly advanced. The stiff, hollow legs with modelled hoof, fetlock and knee, merge into the heavy body, which is only slightly modelled; added male genitals. On the high neck the mane is indicated by wavy incised lines; the same decoration is used on the long, pointed tail. Venthole under body and below tail. Saddle with high pommel in front, raised rounded edge at sides and behind. The horse's back was drawn up to form the sides of the hollow rider, who wears knee length trousers with groove down outer side, the lower bare to the ankle. Most of body and head of rider missing. non-joining fragments preserve the round neck of the garment and the forearms, the hands in position to grasp reins.* Horse has broad breastband, bridle with stud, and heavy reins. Horse's head and neck much restored; whole now set up on wooden base...Thise horseman has been attributed to Paphos because of the large quantity of crushed tile fragments in the clay; otherwise there would be no reason for supposing it was not locally made." |
