Description | One of a set of body stamps (chhapa) with which to print caste marks on the foreheads of a Hindu devotee each morning after praying and bathing in the ganges. Rectangular wire openwork with large flattened area consisting of three rows of script and linear border, most likely Bengali. Attached to the back side are 4 twisted metal prongs at each corner of rectangle and 2 shorter prongs at the center. Each of these prongs is connected to a small metal loop. One of the twisted metal prongs and part of the border on one side are broken off and missing. White pigment (?) on wire framework. |
