| Description | Base for Phra Malai statue made during in the Rattanakosin (Rama III [1824-1851]) period. The base references Phra Malai, a monk, visiting Hell. The emaciated beings implored him to tell their relatives upon his return to the terrestrial world to make merit on their behalf and to refrain from doing evil deeds. The pretas, hungry ghosts, are realistically rendered and are full of vitality. Note the mother and adolescent son on one of the corners. There is an inscription on the side which reads: A father name Ni, A mother named Noe, Donated this work to make merit for, Father Dhai and Mother Nuaan. |
