Description | -White-paste earthenware jar, small, about 4-5” high (?) with clear glaze, over label (i.e. no decal). Jar itself is cylindrical, with circular base (flat, no indentation, unglazed) leading to straight sides which form an edge at the shoulder and then narrow through the neck, finally expending to form a larger rim with a pronounced lip. Opening is wide enough to view inside – also glazed (entire interior). That rounds off at the bottom. There is some dirt and debris still left on inside of jar. Outside front of jar has large, stylized label – dotted border around text/picture, the message reads: “Anchovy Paste For Sandwiches & c. By Appointment Purveyors to Her Majesty. Prepared by Crosse & Blackwell, 21 Soho Square. London. Established in 1(7)06” (smeared). In the middle of this text is a trademark design showing a shield topped by a crown with the words “Honisdit Qui malypense ( ) droit”. On the left side of the shield is a lion facing outward wearing a crown and a unicorn sits on the right side and turns its head back toward the shield. [2014] |
