Description

Brown bark cloth, patterned with alternating groups of thick and thin dark red stripes. Oiled. Probably made of mamaki (Pipturus sp.). Possibly a sleeping tapa (kapa moe) (Kaeppler). Collected on the United States Exploring Expedition (1838-1842) by Titian R. Peale. “Waterproof dress [garment] of oiled ‘tapa.’ Female attire.” on Peale list. Ka Hana Kapa #395.
