Description

Sommerville: Sardonyx. Mars and Minerva. Fragment. Greek and Roman Cameos, Case S.

Vermeule: Sardonyx. Cameo. (Unmounted). Jugate busts of Ares and Athena to right, wearing helmets, laurel wreaths, cuirasses and cloaks. The features also suggest an emperor and empress such as Hadrian and Sabina (A.D. 117-135). The stone is perhaps ancient but it also has a somewhat renaissance flavor. Appears to have been cut down and shows breaks on right side.
