Skyphos

Corinthian ware, two handles, zone of ducks, red and brown on buff. Buff clay of fine texture. Shape: underside of foot has flat circular rim and sloping sides. Foot short. Body depressed spherical shape no neck. Lip short and flaring with rounded edge. Rim narrow with broad mouth. Two round loop handles attached at mid-shoulder. Intact. Decoration: Design paint dark brown with purplish red and white added. Foot and lower half solidly dark brown at shoulder (handle zone) on both obverse and reverse, frieze composed of two water birds in design paint. Upper wing at bird purple/red and feathers alternatively red and brown, brown feathers further embellished with white dot benter. Brown shapeless blob fill ornaments also on frieze. Brown applied to small area either side of handles. Outer face of rim has patterned design placed centrally, row of brown rectangles set at intervals between fine horizontal brown lines. Above and below this band. Bands of brown dots on reserved ground. Upper and lower margins provided by fine horizontal brown lines. On inner face of rim bands pf purple/red and white. Handles brown. Interior painted dark brown. Incisions outline wings and feathers of water birds and outline and mark features of blob filling ornaments in frieze.
