| Description | Food bowl (yabat). Made from a single piece of sago bark (from upper branch), folded with split cane lacings. Bark is heated before shaping. Bone awl 9see 89-17-64/65) used to bore holes for lacings. Loop of fiber at one end is a handle/hanger. Cooked food is placed in the yabat and passed around. Usually there is one yabat for men, another for women, made by men or women. This yabat made by Johannis Katoa, Yetini clan, Dome village. Purchased from maker 6/88. Made for collection. |
