Description

Three frage. which join to give complete rim and sustantial parts of sides of large cauldron. Shape cannot be accurately judged until restored but clear that sides bulged out sharply from rim. Apparently crushed and broken (probably flattened) in antiquity; breaks between rim fragments seem fresh. Varied patina: granular lt. green to smooth dk. green to bare metal. Patches of rough whitish incrustation, especially on (a). (a) is largest frag. preserved farthest down side. Lower edge very broken and uneven with large cracks and flaps once folded inward from bottom, since hammered out. Vertical fold line ca. the center. Edges seem broken off in antiquity rather than corroded. Rivet holes for 2 attachements, one set triangular, one set rectangular. Rivets preserved on inside in rectangular set and upper R of triangular set. Ram protome 67-39-2b fits to rectangular set of rivets; bull protome 67-39-4 close to fitting other set, but cf. under that number. No traces of original holes farther apart on (a). "Spear" is scratched in (a) just below rim at L. edge, "shaft" extending onto (b) across join. (b) has one set of triangular rivet holes with all three rivets preserved. on inside. Bull protome (67-39-3) fits. On body area of reddish corrosion which looks like iron is present. (c) has one set of rectangular rivet holes, three of which have rivets preserved on inside. Ram protome (67-39-2a) fits.
