Description

Sommerville: Sardonyx. The Power of Love. Cupid in a chariot drawn by a goat and a lion. Greek and Roman Cameos, Case R.

Vermeule: Chalcedony-Onyx. Cameo. (Unmounted). Eros driving a cart to the right. The cart is drawn by a goat and a lion, symbolic of the power of love. Sommerville adds the quotation "He drives not only the lascivious but the strong." 16th or 17th century.
