Description | Sommerville: Antique paste cameo, color white on pale ruby. Paris. Antique Pastes, Case UUU. Vermeule: Glass paste, imitating Sardonyx. Cameo. (Unmounted) Colors: white on pale red. A mythological scene, Herakles flanked by two women, the one on the right appearing to be slightly stooped and elderly. The one on the left is probably a goddess since an attribute such as an owl (Athena) appears at her feet near the center of the composition. Graeco-Roman. Ist or IInd A.D., imitating a Hellenistic composition. |
