Description

Ganesha Hanging made of cotton and silk embroidery and mirror work (abla bharat or shisha) on undyed plain-weave cotton. The piece shows Ganesha in the center, with attendants (maybe his two wives) and animals. Surya (the sun deity) is shown in top left and right corners. There is an embroidered inscription on the center-left, just below a stitched line that divides the piece in half. It is likely to be from Saurashtra based on the figuration (particularly of Ganesha) in chain stitch filled with herringbone stitch. The piece consists of a cream-colored cloth with animals and standing figures sewn in yellow, tan, olive-green, pink, purple, orange and blue thread. Upper and lower divisions of piece separated by geometric line. The lower portion has two figures on horseback and a woman in the middle, all surrounded by various birds and quadrapeds. Tassel on each corner.
