Description | Dogwood; original diameter of wood tapered half way along its length to form a handle with a smaller diameter which is faceted at the end; the striking end is also faceted to form a point. Attached tag in Pennypacker's (?) handwriting reads: "Mallet made of dogwood used in making of masks obtained from Will Westlong, Big Cove, Cherokee, N.C." Condition: Many splits along the grain; bark is loose in some spots where still attached. Sent to Registrar's for freezing 3/91. |
