Dummy Head

Wooden human head, smaller than life-sized, with flat bottom, Painted white. Round, staring light blue eyes with black pupils, horizontal slit for mouth. Triangular ears outlined in red. Moustache with upturned ends finely drawn in black. On top of head, continuing to back of neck, a symmetrical design, in red, of three paired loops and sprials on either side of a center line. Second, thick red line from side to side over top of head. Twiter plant fiber cord issuing from center of top. Distinctly "European" appearance. One of "3 wooden heads painted in red, black & white used by the Muruts in their ceremonial feasts & dances." (Furness's Collection list nos. 52, 53, 54) Exhibited at the Wistar Institute in May, 1897.
