Description

An oval pāpale (hat) made of plaited plant fiber. The brim is curved and narrow, and the crown of the hat is short and rounded. According to a label attached to one side of the hat, the flower appliqué on the front of the hat is made of stems from a species of pumpkin.

Pāpale are Hawaiian hats typically woven from natural materials such as lauhala (pandanus leaves), coconut fronds, and other plant fibers. During the nineteenth century, increased contact with Europeans and Americans, particularly whalers frequenting Honolulu, introduced new stylistic influences on Hawaiian hat production.
