Description

Painting for a small temple or story telling board. Multi panelled painting which may have been used by Mon travelling story tellers, as visual aids to accompany jatakas stories, epics from the Ramayana and other legends. Semi-circular top panel with painting of flower. Three rectangular panels with bamboo stick braces. Images are of Gautama as a monk having a meal from his alms bowl on Bandava mountain and King Bimmasara requesting him to come deliver a sermon after attaining Buddhahood. Second panel is Brothers Taputtha and Balika, Mon merchants offering honey cakes to Gautama Buddha and in return he gave them eight hairs (legend of Shwedagon). Third panel is Descent of Buddha from Tavatimsa, Brahma holding umbrella over Buddha. Painting is in red, orange, yellow, brown, blue and green. Foil diamond appliques, paper fringe and tinsel decorations.
